Education
University of Wales, Aberystwyth BSc (Hons) Environmental Science Class 2:1, with First for dissertation on the health impacts of long-range transboundary air pollution.

University of Wales, Aberystwyth PhD Analytical Biotechnology/Microbiology; thesis title ‘Rapid Detection of Food Spoilage using Vibrational Spectroscopy and Machine Learning’. This was under the guidance and supervision of Prof. Roy Goodacre were we developed a novel method for the extremely rapid (seconds as opposed to current techniques which take hours), accurate and quantitative method for the detection of bacterial spoilage of muscle foods.

Miscellaneous
David was educated on the Welsh coast at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, obtaining a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science and a PhD in Analytical Biotechnology/Microbiology. After 11 years in rural Wales (three in Pembrokeshire and eight in Ceredigion), he moved to the northwest first working at UMIST then The University of Manchester.

His research involving the rapid and quantitative detection of foodborne bacteria using FT-IR and machine learning has been widely publicised, featuring on BBC TV and radio, at the Science Museum in London, as well as in the national and international press (e.g. Wired). With more recent work on the through-container detection of multiple chemical markers of counterfeit alcohol using handheld SORS also being widely publicised, e.g. Newsweek, Scientific American, The Sunday Times. He has also been Guest Editor for themed-collections in RSC journals such as Analyst, and a reviewer for over 35 academic journals including The Lancet and Chemical Society Reviews.

David has one daughter Siân Rae, and on Christmas Eve 2013 became a proud Grandad for the first time with the birth of Emily, and for the second time in June 2017 with the birth of Ellie. Interests include:  The great outdoors, travel, reading, art (especially painting, photography, and sculpture), architecture, history, music, eating-out, gigs, gym, yoga, DhammaBuddhist meditation, retreats, badminton, walking, cooking, cinema, galleries and museums, abseiling, and photography.
