Education

Pembrokeshire College, Pembrokeshire (Student of the year) BTEC National Diploma in Science (Health Studies) Distinctions in all final year modules.

University of Wales, Aberystwyth BSc (Hons) Environmental Science Class 2:1, with First for dissertation on the health impacts of long-range transboundary air pollution.

University of Wales, Aberystwyth PhD FT-IR/Microbiology; thesis title 'Rapid Detection of Food Spoilage using Vibrational Spectroscopy and Machine Learning'. This was under the guidance and supervision of Prof. Roy Goodacre were we developed a novel method for the extremely rapid (seconds as opposed to current techniques which take hours), accurate and quantitative method for the detection of bacterial spoilage of muscle foods.

Miscellaneous

I am a member of the Society for General Microbiology (SGM) and the Institute of Biology (IoB) and have a variety of interests including the detection and identification of metabolites using a combination of the many hyphenated analytical techniques available to our group.

After 11 years in rural Wales (three in Pembrokeshire and eight in Borth, Ceredigion ), I returned to the North-West and now live in a village to the South of Manchester and on the edge of the Cheshire plain.

My interests outside work include: reading (mainly non-fiction), music (AMG, the best music encyclopaedia on the web), film (IMDb), visiting places of historic, cultural or scenic interest, or indeed just fun days out!(Rough Guides), fine beer and ales (German beer guide to Manchester), and retaining a sense of humour, ideally via a combination of one or two of the above (Young Frankenstein).
